Used MBP's for decades too. A few months ago decided to get a Mac Studio for my photo and video work and a MacBook Air M2, 8gb on the side for office and on the go work. Find myself doing everything on the machine while traveling and hardly feel any difference with my old MBP. I switch machines every 2/3 years. Yes the M2 is slower than the maxed out MBP that I had but hardly noticeable. In a way I feel stupid spending so much more money all those years. Although I'm aware that the M series has really closed the gap between MBP and MacBook Air. And yes, make sure you have enough storage on board.
