Flex widget not working in Test Mode

Troubleshooting

The flex widget seems to be having trouble in test mode. Specifically when using "Expanded" to allow the children to span evenly in row mode. It just won't run, and is generally super glitchy, even when I do get it to work by tinkering with the various layout settings up and down the widget tree.

The thing is, it works fine in run mode and when published.

Anyone else experiencing this? It's super annoying that I can't really use test mode anymore to quickly iterate on updates.

Also, while I'm here, I feel like test mode IN GENERAL seems to have jumped the shark lately. Even before this Flex Widget issue came up, I have been having a lot of trouble with it. Test mode seems to actually work maybe 20% of the time (i.e. load without error), it takes 5-6 minutes to load when it does work, and most of the time "instant reload" just results in an error/crash of test mode and I have to restart a new session anyway. Is this just me and my huge complex app, or is there something generally afoot?

What have you tried so far?

Hours of troubleshooting layout, testing different theories, generally pulling hair out.
