Side Bar that expands on click

I want to create a trigger that will on a click expand my sidebar widget.

There is going to be a action on a click that changes the state of an element, Boolean, adequatly.

My problem is - that the Boolean state that I given I cannot somehow refer to with an action.

Is there a tutorial or walkthrough that can help me here?

What have you tried so far?

Creating a global state and relating the widget and click on a widget to it.

Creating a local state and relating the widget and action on click to change it. (toggle).

None seem to work, so I must be doing something wrong.
