Start timer so it works across pages - component?

My goal is pretty simple, Id like to start a timer on page load and have it stay running as a user goes to the next couple pages.

I tried adding the timer widget in a component but when I try to add a "start timer" action on page load the option is not there. Tells me there is no timer on the page.

Any ideas on how this could be done?
