Is it possible to include a locally uploaded file as a field in a custom data type?

I would like to store some images locally, edit some metadata for them, and store the image plus metadata in a list variable as part of the page state. Is this possible using e.g. custom data types? I noticed uploaded media / bytes is not an option for fields in custom data types.
